Puzzle NotesLoved ones of the Inkubator,
Today, February 14, is Valentine's Day, a day when we celebrate love in all its forms. Today is also V-Day, a global activist movement to end violence against all women, girls, and people with non-binary, non-conforming, and fluid identities who are targets of gender-based violence. While Covid-19 has meant that this year's V-Day won't be commemorated with in-person performances of Eve Ensler's groundbreaking 1996 play, The Vagina Monologues, there is an even greater need to raise money and awareness, as the stresses of the pandemic have particularly exacerbated intimate partner violence around the world.
Here at the Inkubator, we're donating part of our editors' fees for this puzzle to local shelters, and we hope you'll join us in doing what you can (whether that is donating money or supplies, volunteering, or amplifying the voices and work of activists) for national and global efforts to stop the violence, or for organizations in your community.
We are very pleased, on this day, to be publishing a bonus from Nina Sloan. We think you'll find it lightly challenging, as well as celebratory and appropriately themed!
Originally from New York City, Nina is a 19-year-old first-year student at Dartmouth College studying English and Art History. If you manage to catch her outside the library, you'll probably see her binding books, arranging music for her a cappella group, or, of course, solving and constructing crosswords. Though she is a long-time solver of crosswords, she just started constructing last year. Since then, her puzzles have been published in The Los Angeles Times and The Wall Street Journal, and she is so excited to see her latest puzzle appear in the Inkubator! Find Nina on Twitter at @ninassloan.
Our next puzzle, a themeless from Sophie Buchmueller, will be published on February 18.
