Puzzle Notes

We're delighted to be publishing this well-read puzzle by storied constructor Annemarie Brethauer. We think you'll find it moderately challenging!

Despite leaving the study of linguistics for a career in government cable television, Annemarie never lost her love of wordplay. Creating documentaries on subjects like zoning codes challenged her to make the most arcane subject matter interesting, a skill which she hopes guides her crossword puzzle construction. Her puzzles have appeared in Games World of Puzzles magazine, Encyclopaedia Britannica, the Los Angeles Times, Universal Syndicate and USA Today, among other publications.

Want more puzzles from Inkubator constructors? Buy our book! Inkubator Crosswords: 100 Audacious Puzzles by Women and Nonbinary Creators is now available. It includes 75 puzzles from the first two years of the Inkubator, plus 25 all-new, never-before-published originals. Order your copy now, or ask for it at your favorite indie bookstore.

But wait: there's more! This month we launched our collaboration with the travel portal Atlas Obscura. Every month, you'll find a free puzzle from the Inkubator that connects to an Atlas Obscura article. Here's May's puzzle, by themeless editor Stella Zawistowski.

And yet another announcement! Hayley Gold's graphic novel, Letters to Margaret, is now available in both softcover and digital editions. There's also a mini-comic on sale that includes crosswords by Inkubator constructor Robyn Weintraub.

Coming up next, on May 19: a vigorous themeless from Carly Schuna.

All best,
Laura, Tracy, Stella, and Brooke
